On a plot of land in Senica na Hané, a short distance from Olomouc, just six and a half metres wide and up to eighty metres long, originally stood the outhouse to the neighbouring farm. Due to its condition, the architects from the TŘI.ČTRNÁCT architects studio decided to demolish it and replace it with a new building that would meet the current requirements of a house for living and at the same time complement its context.
Designing a house on such a complex plot was a great challenge for the architects. It was necessary to deal with the different angles of the walls of the surrounding houses and the narrow manoeuvring space. An important issue was the degree to which the expression of the house was integrated into the surrounding buildings. After long discussions with the investor and the authorities, it was decided to be slightly different from the form of the surrounding buildings rather than trying to resemble it.
From the beginning, it was important that the mass of the house respected the existing terraced housing. The footprint almost follows the original building, extending into the garden by less than two metres. The street façade respects the street line, the roof pitch and the eaves height of the neighbouring building. Both elevations seek to illuminate the deep layout as much as possible through large glazing bars.
In the back of the garden there is a small garden house, and a parking space. The white colour that flows from the house into the wall surfaces throughout the garden is the result of an attempt to unify the varied materials of the surrounding buildings.
The house is designed for a young family with two children and emphasizes the quality of materials, simplicity and maximum efficiency of space. On the first floor there is a vestibule with a dressing room, bathroom, pantry and kitchen with dining room. The staircase in the vestibule leads to the second floor, where there is a children's room, utility room and living room with fireplace. The living room is spatially connected to the dining room on the ground floor. The attic is designed with a bedroom, bathroom and a children's room with a large roof studio and a dressing room.
The supporting system of the house is designed from wooden Palco beams and KVH lumber. The structure is diffusion sealed and insulated with PUR foam and sheathed on both sides with OSB boards. On the exterior side, facade insulation and a fine twisted washable facade plaster was added. On the interior side, a separate structure of SDK profiles was assembled to house the plumbing, which is filled with soundproofing wool and sheathed with plasterboard and coarse-grain plaster.
The building complies with low-energy standards, heating is provided by a heat pump, controlled ventilation air conditioning with recuperation and a cast-iron fireplace as a backup heat source.
