Former farm house turned into contemporary housing

Veličná, Slovakia

There is a former farm house in the center of the Slovak village Veličná at the foot of Malá Fatra. It was acquired by the investor together with other farm buildings as a legacy. His intention was to create contemporary housing for his whole family, but at the same time to preserve the original building as much as possible. Considerable emphasis was also placed on preserving the original materiality. All building materials which were used are exclusively of natural origin.

Although the former farm house was in very good shape, the architects decided that the new building will work as a new separate unit from the structural point of view. It is inserted into the existing barn, it stands on its own foundations and the original kiln has become only its cover. The original farm building in the side wing had to me completely replaced. The original material was reused.

The spatial, material and functional design of the house is influenced by the original construction completely. Not only the outer envelope corresponds to the old building, but also all structural elements. None of the original element has been removed or replaced

Some wooden parts of the former farm building remained in their original position. Elswhere, they stepped back towards the interior and became the facade of the new building. On the west side of the facade, this stepping back created a covered terrace. The original century-old roofing was on some spots supplemented with new glass tiles. Daylight managed to get into the interior through high windiw openings and a semi-permeable part of the facade, which was created by perforating the wooden cladding and turning some of the facade panels.
