House in Los Llanos

Lorca, Spain

House in Los Llanos is a timeless and eclectic home that emerges from the partial restoration of a structure that was nearly a ruin. Though little remained of the original structure, the house held great emotional value —it had been the owner's childhood home.

Following Spain’s Architecture Quality Law, the design seeks a harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape following a model of sustainability that considers environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Local materials were prioritized, and existing elements were reused wherever possible. The project was conceived not only as a physical structure, but also as an expression of cultural identity —one that deeply ties the place to its inhabitant and their family history.

The construction process involved a level of craftsmanship. Semi-buried walls allowed the client to experiment with the site's soil, exploring both its physical qualities and limitations. The care investe in each step reflects the same dedication once given to the land by the client’s parents, creating a quiet parallel and a holistic connection. Original elements—such as parts of the roof—have been reused inside. For example, timber boards from the stable’s old roof now functioning as shelving in the contemporary living space.

The House in Los Llanos offers a thoughtful reflection on the value of rural architecture—often overlooked or dismissed— and its renewed relevance in contemporary life. Restoring the essence of these once-working farmhouses allows current inhabitants to reconnect with their ancestors and create meaningful continuity for future generations. It leaves a contemporary imprint while preserving the memory of those who once lived there as children.

It is a timeless refuge, protected from urban expansion. A home that invites reflection on our relationship with place, how we become part of it, and the evolving ways in which we might inhabit the future.

The original layout, once divided into small rooms, has been reinterpreted through a contemporary approach: a principal space defined only by its structure, without suspended ceilings, offering the family a generous sense of volume and openness in their daily life activities. In contrast to the domestic model of the 1960s and ’70s, the rest of the program—bedrooms and bathroom—has been condensed into the remaining volume to prioritize communal living.
