Family Home Heart

Family Home Heart

The shape and atmosphere of an end plot in Havličkův Brod's residential Žižkov III zone were so specific that they inspired the design of a house whose organic floor plan clearly resembles the shape of a heart.

The sloping terrain of the parcel gradually descends across its length, creating a difference in height of about one floor in relation to street level. Architect Daniela Polubědovová took advantage of this, locating the house’s utility room and technical facilities and a garage with direct street access in this space. Thanks to this, the main residential part of the house could be positioned on almost the highest part of the land.

The local character of the development is preserved in the street-facing direction. The house is situated closer to the road and is largely unfenced. In keeping with the surrounding landscape, the architects chose natural materials and colours. The façade is clad with finely corrugated rusted sheet metal and supports the graceful curve of the building. The pergola is of wooden beams which echo the wave pattern of the glazed façade and creates an imaginary lash over the house's "open eye." With the entrance, it was necessary to support the intimacy of a home intended for habitation, and so a relatively closed façade with a minimal number of windows was created. The living area, including a kitchen and bedroom, faces the garden. Each room offers direct access to the terrace and impressive views of the adjacent forest.

The green roof, the wild greenery of the surrounding grasses, the dense growth of bamboo and the rusty Roxor poles of the designed fence complete the colour combination, which corresponds to the changing colours of the surrounding landscape. Natural motifs were reflected in the interior furnishings, not only in the choice of materials and colours (old wood, natural stone, heavy wooden beams, shades of light green, sky blue or dark green) but also in the design of interior details. Door handles, handrails and pulleys on heating features in the bathrooms were specially cast from aluminium in moulds made from locally sourced sticks, leaves and wooden stumps.

The investor’s remarkable enthusiasm for these experiments and his technical capacity were a huge help in making such a demanding process run smoothly.
