House Behind a House

Prague - Horní Počernice, Czech Republic

This extension of an older family home assembles residential units into a functional whole, following the principle of accumulation. Extending into the garden on the north side of the lot, the extension comprises box-like rooms, whose shape is determined by their function. They have been arranged with consideration of the existing greenery, visual distances and the shading of adjoining lots.

The compositional structure extending in four directions creates smaller spaces, permeable to the outdoors and designed for different uses and lighting conditions. To the east, an intimate space with a thermal pool. To the west, a terrace connected to the dining room. To the north, an attractive garden with water features that is visible from the living room. To the south, a roof garden in front of the bedroom.

The light wooden structure is based on steel ground screws, delicate pins with minimal groundwork and no use of concrete. The entire load-bearing structure - walls, partitions, ceilings and floors - is built of laminated spruce beams. Laminated boards are used for built-in furniture. Energy-efficient thermal insulation is achieved via a combination of wood wool and a ventilated façade, which omits the need for vapour-proofing. The calculated heat transfer coefficient of the perimeter structure is U = 0.16 W / m2K. The house’s energy efficiency is supported by wooden windows with insulating triple glazing. Natural fibre-cement façade panels ensure that the all-wood structure is fire resistant, which allows for its erection on a small plot, in close proximity to neighbouring structures.
